Part of persons self development is managing emotions and not letting them control us but we need to be able to control them, anger is one of those emotions that needs to be put in check. Undoubtedly, being able to restrain one’s self when stirred up by anger is true heroism that no one but a person of strong faith, high caliber, and strong will can do it. It is not easy for an angry person to control him or herself , restrain their anger and refrain from punishing the person who enraged him. Therefore, the Prophet Muhammad , indicated that real heroism is when a person restrains them-self from being enraged even though there are reasons for the anger. Remember that : “A strong person is not the one who overpowers others; rather,it is the one who contains themselves when they are angry.” Anger is the key of every evil; it results in enmity and grudges that can spoil one’s life. It also gives the devil the chance to control the angry person and make him do and say things that they will later regret.

Intense anger is one of the widest paths that lead people to the Hellfire. Some scholars have said, “If a person obeys their desires and anger, they will lead him to Hell.” Ibn Al-Qayyim may Allah have mercy upon him said, “People enter the Hellfire through three doors: the door of doubt that results in suspecting the religion of Allah(God) , the door of desires that leads to preferring desires to obeying and pleasing Allah The Almighty, and the door of anger that results in oppressing the creation of Allah The Almighty.” Now that we know this we should take the steps our Deen gives us to put it out when it comes to us, it’s not always easy but with the Almighty’s help and some effort we can do it InshaAllah.

❝ Anger comes from the devil, the devil was created of fire, and fire is extinguished only with water; so when one of you becomes angry, he should perform ablution
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)
Abu Dawud Book 036, Hadith Number 4766

❝ When one of you becomes angry while standing, he should sit down. If the anger leaves him, well and good; otherwise he should lie down
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)
Abu Dawud Book 036, Hadith Number 4764

❝ The powerful man is not the one who can wrestle, but the powerful man is the one who can control himself at the time of anger
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ)
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) knew that if a person controlled his anger he would be able to control everything else. That is why the Prophet mentioned in another hadith : ❝ If you’re angry, be silent ❞
Controlling anger can be an indicator of the strength of one’s personality.

Allah mentions as one of the qualities of the Muttaqeen, the God-conscious, that they control their anger :

( Those who give in prosperity and adversity, and those who restrain anger, and those who forgive people. Allah loves the doers of good )
The Quran 3:134
